NRCan rolls out tire survey with labeling implications

OTTAWA -- Results from a new survey by Natural Resources Canada could lead to the development of a commercial tire labeling program.

It’s for that reason the Canadian Trucking Alliance is encouraging carriers to have their say.

Improved tire technology has been identified as a great opportunity to improve the fuel efficiency of commercial trucks and thereby reduce the sector’s carbon footprint, says CTA.

The survey, which can be accessed by clicking here, should take no more than 10 minutes.

It asks how truckers purchase their tires; the most important features in a tire for both tractors and trailers; issues surrounding retreaded tires; managing purchasing and maintenance; experiences with single, wide-base efficient tires; and awareness of SmartWay and other labeling programs

"This is an important opportunity for the industry to educate government on our sector," said CTA CEO David Bradley. "The creation of a tire labeling program, in and of itself, is helpful to the industry but it would also be beneficial to the possible introduction of a rebate system based on this labeling program."

Participating carriers are assured anonymity as all results will be reported to the government in aggregate form.
